AYA / ZIA Wine Galleries
Seewines is the heir of generation-spanning viticultural knowledge with over 80 years of traditional artisanal wine-making experience. The revival of this tradition was marked with the purchase and planting of the first 10ha of vineyards near the town of Kavarna, just a few kilometres from the Black sea shore and the picturesque Cape Kaliakra.
The start of viticulture in our company came in 2014 with the purchase of the first 10 ha of land near Kavarna about 10 km from the shore and Cape Kaliakra.
ZIA WINE GALLERY (ZIA means “LIGHT”)
Located in the Northeastern part of Bulgaria, just 10 km from the Black Sea coast, this is our very first plot planted with vineyards on a flat terrain 130m above sea level. The climate is dominated by the constant breezes from the Black Sea which helps keeping the sugar levels and acidity in the grapes in ballanced. The soil is very rich and most of the work in the vineyards is directed towards avoiding excessively large yields which would lead to watered down produce. It is mostly done by hand, which allows consistent control of the quality of the grapes. The philosophy of Seewines is to follow entirely organic and biodynamic principles – both in the vineyards and during the vinification process.
Here we cultivate our Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Petit Manseng and Pinot Noir under the strict supervision of the very skilled agronomist of Zia Wine Gallery, Vesselina Kassabova (Vesi). Thanks to her remarkable work we have fantastic grapes for the production of our Colorito white wines and the red Pinot Noir.
AYA WINE GALLERY
(AYA means “DESIGN”, “BEAUTIFUL”)
Located in the Southwest of Bulgaria, this hilly terrain is 250-330m above sea level and facing mostly south. The meaning of Aya is remarkably poetic and the art-referencing connotations fully correspond to our deep belief in the unbreakable and eternal connection between wine and creativity.
The climate is warm with constant breezes blowing from the Aegean Sea and high diurnal variation due to the cooling winds descending from the surrounding mountains. The soils are sandy with a high percentage of limestone and low humus content with a yellowish color, typical for the region. The average age of our old vineyards is around 50 years and they include Cabernet Franc and the local endemic variety called Broadleaved Melnik Grapevine, named after its typical big leaves. We’ve also newly-planted Syrah, Censault, Grenache and Merlot to add more diversity to our wine portfolio. The biodynamic principles here are in the hands of our agronomist Miroslav Dimitrov (Miro) who rigorously adheres to Seewines' philosophy of working with nature and not against it.
In both locations we grow our vines organically by adhering to biodynamic practices, our goal being to promote healthy and deep growth of the root system. The work in the vineyards is exclusively manual, which allows strict monitoring and quality control. Biodynamics is a complex and not well-known science in Bulgaria, so we contacted Julian Reneaud, a specialist in biodynamics and winegrower with international practice in the USA (Opus One) and Italy (Caiarossa). Julian advises us and teaches our agronomists the belief in working with, not against, nature.
Julian Renaud discovered his passion for wine thanks to his grandfather who was a winemaker in Corbières, Southern France. He first began making wine at the age of 14 and studied viticulture in Toulouse and Montpelier. After completing his two Master's degrees in agronomy and oenology Julian moved to California where he got involved with one of the most famous wineries in the world, Opus One.
Since 2014 he has been leading the organic and biodynamic winery Caiarossa in Tuscany and teaching winemakers around the world about organic and biodynamic principles. Julian Renaud believes that the right way for wine to express the true potential of the terroir is through minimal intervention of the oenologist during the vinification process. Today he consults Seewines regarding our own wine production within the series Colorito, Ayano and Disegno.
She is a wonderful organoleptic and she navigates excellently in the sensory characteristics of wine. Mariana knows that wine production begins at the vineyard so you'll find her with the vines, at the cellar, keeping a strict eye on the quality of the
grapes and the grape juice. It is no coincidence that she's about to get her second Master's (the first one being for oenology), this time in agronomy with a degree in an international course of Plant Medicine.
Mariana is part of the new generation of winemakers and it's no wonder that her initials are MAG – she works her magic with the grapes and is willing to experiment with varieties and sorts of wine. She's the talent behind our fresh and expressive Melnik 55 bottle, as well as the favourite gem in the Disegno collection – the delicate Petit Manseng dessert wine.
TO DEVELOP A NEW AND DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF WINE WITHIN OUR GUESTS AND CUSTOMERS BY UNITING WINE AND ART AND BY TAKING THEM ON A JOURNEY WHICH OPENS UP ALL THEIR SENSES.
To visit us to immerse yourself into the world of wine.
The winery is located on a very specific terrain: atop a hill with the slope facing towards the best view.
We think of the estate as of a wine gallery - or the place where oenology meets art. After all, wine production is an art itself: the uniqueness of each crop reflects the style of its maker much like each brush stroke on a painting reflects the style of its painter.
So why not visit probably the only gallery in the world where you can not only touch the art, but drink it or even wake up surrounded by it?
Wine and Art are the Yin and Yang of Seewines concept – its heart and soul. It is manifested in the names of our estates, in the brands of our wines, in the places where we meet our customers, our friends. Wine and winemaking are our own art. We combine nature, art, terroir, wine, hospitality and good people and create a Winique Experience – a real pleasure of body and soul. This essence is fully manifested in our symbol: a tracery of the letter A ( Aya) in Bulgarian and in Japanese, which produces an intriguing combination, in which you can also find the letter Z (Zia), as well as a stylized figure of a person in flight, wings spread, in aspiration.
And this is also the meaning of the Japanese letter A – striving forwards and upwards, flight of the spirit in the pursuit of light!
