For nearly two decades, Luís Seabra has been at the heart of a cultural shift in Portuguese winemaking, leading a movement of young, independent winemakers who are making history by restoring historic vineyards, grape varieties, and techniques.
After a successful career as a soil researcher in Vinho Verde, an enology lecturer, and a producer of world-renowned still wines in the Douro region, in 2013 Seabra finally launched his own small winery — Luís Seabra Vinhos. His work is dedicated to proving that fresh, elegant, terroir-driven, unfined and unfiltered wines can be made in this region, despite centuries-old traditions favoring the harvest of overripe grapes and the dominance of large wineries owned by international companies.
Seabra’s deep understanding of terroir, combined with his philosophy of minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery, has propelled him onto the international stage as a leader of the “New Portugal” wine renaissance. According to Eric Asimov of The New York Times, Seabra “makes some of the most compelling Portuguese wines, both white and red.”
As his project in Douro grows, he expands his work to include special projects in the neighboring regions of Vinho Verde and Dão. Wherever he works, Luís simply wants to make wines he loves to drink — wines that clearly express a sense of place, ideally made from old vines. For him, ideal wines are restrained yet lively, balanced, and suitable for aging.
