Art. # 5587

Impressive aromatics with crushed berries, violets and black olives. Hints of vanilla and some caramel. Decadent. Full-bodied and round with very creamy tannins that melt into the wine. It starts off slowly and then kicks off a few seconds later. The tannins are extremely polished and refined. The 2017 Petrus comes galloping out of the glass with bold, expressive notions of Black Forest cake, blueberry preserves and Christmas pudding with nuances of molten chocolate, Chinese five spice, candied violets, licorice and kirsch plus wafts of roses and cinnamon stick. The aromatics at this youthful stage are atypical for Petrus and quite stunning—this 2017 is a bombshell! Furthermore, it is a unique style for this estate and one avid collectors should seek out! Little known 50 years ago, this chateau has seen the rise of a myth about the uniqueness of its wine. The wine’s inimitability is due to many factors, first of all, an exceptional terroir - 40 meters above sea level, the highest point of the appellation - with a layer of heavy clay soil and an iron subsoil. These are ideal conditions for the expression of the Merlot grape. With such a special terroir, the approach in the vineyard and cellar is traditional and respectful. The work done in the vineyard is fastidious - severe pruning in the winter, regular ploughing, crop-thinning, de-leafing and manicuring the clusters in the summer allow the perfect ripening of the fruit. The grapes are manually harvested within two afternoons and sorted before crush. Fermentation is carried out gently, without any overextraction, in temperature-controlled concrete tanks. The blend, very often pure Merlot, is defined in December and the young wine is aged in 100% new oak barrels.

Chateau Petrus

Chateau Petrus

Bordeaux

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is perhaps the most famous wine region in France. It stretches 130 kilometers inland from the Atlantic coast. In 2018, 111,000 hectares of vineyards were registered, a figure that remains largely constant over the previous decade. The main varieties grown here are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc and they are used to make different wines, each producer having its own blend and proportions of mixing the varieties. Here are produced some of the most famous, most expensive and long-lasting wines in the world - the well-known subregions Medoc, Graves, St. Emilion, Pomerol and many others. Bordeaux is divided by the Gironde River on the left and right banks. Characteristic of the left bank (Medoc, Haut Medoc, Graves) is the more serious presence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend of wine, while on the right bank (St. Emillion, Pomerol) merlot predominates. In addition to red wines, Bordeaux is famous for the production of white, mainly a blend between Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, with the Sauternes subregion and the leading Chateau d’Yquem, famous for its complex and multi-layered, aromatic and sweet botrytized dessert wine.

Merlot

Merlot

Southwest of France is Merlot’s birthplace - the regions of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Merlot is nowadays widely planted across the world much like Cabernet Sauvignon because it is an early maturing grape variety and because of its ability to ripen fully even in slightly cooler climates. Smooth, velvety, soft and rounded - an “easy drinking" wine with tender tannic structure - these are the common descriptions of Merlot wines.
