Zagreus

Zagreus

Zagreus Winery started in 1998 with the planting of its first vineyards in the Plovdiv field, not far from the town of Parvomay. Zagreus from ancient Greek means "the great hunter" and is considered the prototype of the god of wine and merriment Dionysus. At the moment, about 120 ha of Mavrud, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah grape varieties are being cultivated. In 2010 Zagreus decided to convert to organic production and in 2013 they received their certificate. A curious fact is that Zagreus is the only winery in Bulgaria to also produce grape seed oil.

Thracian valley

Thracian valley

In this region, which includes Southern Bulgaria, the climate is temperate continental protected from northern winds thanks to Stara Planina, with good rain distribution. It includes the central parts of the Thracian lowland and parts of Sakar. Most of the red grape varieties are concentrated in this area. Mavrud, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Muscat, Pamid and others are grown. The climatic conditions of the region favour the production of rich, dense, memorable red wines, especially from the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Mavrud. Good wines from the local variety Mavrud are especially valued for their aroma and taste of small red fruits, spices and herbs.

Syrah

Syrah

Syrah/Shiraz - Two names of one and the same grape variety - the winemakers from the Old world use Syrah and the ones from the New world - Shiraz. The grape is a deep red, even the pulp, therefore this variety is not suitable for blanc de noir wine style. Syrah wine has specific floral aromas in its youth and develops notes of herbs and spices such as white and black pepper as it ages. These varietal specifics come out better when blended with a small amount of Viognier - a method gaining popularity more and more around the world. Syrah produces wines capable of ageing and improving over decades, which enhances its plummy and almost oriental spicy flavours.
