Savatiano 2023
Savatiano is the name of the region's characteristic indigenous variety, organically grown in the vineyards of Ktima Matsa on the outskirts of Athens. After alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine is aged on fine lees for 6 months with gentle stirring (batonnage).
Light lemon color. The nose has a subtle aromatic character of white flowers, white-fleshed peach, and mint with a dominant background of pear. Full-bodied with refreshing acidity, the aromatic characteristics follow those of the nose. Long aromatic finish.

More about this product

Ktima Matsa
Matsa Estate in Attica, is located in Kantza, an area renowned for the cultivation and production of high quality wines. It is considered a historic vineyard established in 1878 with vines over 30 years old. The estate, with a total area of just over 12 hectares, is cultivated according to the principles of organic farming. Its soils are of medium mechanical composition, clay loam, rich in calcium, potassium and manganese. The main feature of the ecosystem is the famous Attica climate. Warm and dry with mild winters and hot summers, ideal for viticulture. Although this historic vineyard in Kantza is considered the cradle of the Savatiano variety, in recent years there have been many experimental plantings with various foreign and other Greek varieties. Currently the varieties Savatiano, Roditis, Assyrtiko, Syrah, Malagouzia, and Sauvignon blanc are all cultivated on the estate.

Savatiano
Attica is its hometown, but it is also grown extensively in the neighboring Boeotia. In total, its plantings cover more than a sixth of the Greek vineyard (10,500ha out of a total 63,900). A variety with moderate aromatic intensity, reminiscent of apples, white peach, and even melon when the fruit is riper. Seems to age well, and over time it develops a honey-toasted Hunter Valley Semillon character. Very cleverly oaked or resinated will make the wines remarkably versatile partners to food. For many decades it has been associated with low-quality Retsina. Still, nowadays, more outstanding care in the vineyard and the winemaking process have assisted the variety to show its character. Consumers are discovering the delicious wines, which come at fantastic prices. Unlike other varieties (e.g. capricious Xinomavro) Savatiano is easy to handle and to acquire the desired style.
