Doolhof
Nestled in the Cape mountains where night stars replace the city’s bright lights, Doolhof is an award-winning wine estate set at the foot of the Limietberg mountain range. Due to its magical location, the micro-climate offers some of the most exceptional growing areas, which is expressed in the wines. Doolhof (‘Labyrinth’) was so named as a reference to the beautiful convoluted hills and valleys that surround it. Its proud history dates back to the early 18th Century when grapes suitable for the production of wine were introduced by Huguenot settlers from 1712. The varying microclimates, growing conditions, and soil types make it ideal for growing wine grapes. With a focus largely on Malbec and Pinotage, their winemaking philosophy is sustainably orientated with varietal expressiveness at its core.

Професор Абрахам Перолд създава сорта Пинотаж като кръстосва сортовете Пино Ноар и Сензо през 1925 година. По това време в Южна Африка сорта Сензо е бил наричан Хермитаж и от там за име на новия сорт ученият избира Пинотаж. Професорът засажда четири семена от кръстоската в двора на собствената си резиденция, където има експериментална градина и след това забравя за тях. По-късно, през 1928 той изоствя университета, за да приеме работа в компания за производство на алкохол и градината обрасва с плевели и храсти и запустява. Когато от университета изпращат хора да я разчистят, един от тях е Чарли Нийхаус. Той е млад лектор, който е знаел за посетите семена и спасява четирите млади лозички от разчистващия екип. Днес сортът е емблема на южноафриканското вино и се отглежда в различни райони, вината от него също се правят в различни стилове, от по-наситени, плътни и повлияни от дъб червени, до елегантни, свежи и по-леки, с типичните за сорта нотки на червени горски плодове, череши, цветя, сухи билки, характерна минералност, пикантност и нотка на кафе.
