If the name Cru is unique and rare in use, it designates an individual production unit in the same way as a castle or an estate. Philippe Castel, owner since 2006, wanted to maintain the name Cru la Maqueline, operated since 1892. Driven by the owner's other passion: the breeding of reining horses, the property immerses us in a "Western" universe, outside the traditional Bordeaux codes. The wine affirms the singularity of the property, with a strong dominance of Merlot. Тhe Vineyard covers 64 hectares, including 14 ha for the 2011 Cru, planted at 6,500 vines/hectare on sandy-clayey soil. The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot at 93%, supplemented by Petit Verdot (4%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (3%). The knowledge of each plot and the viticultural know-how allow the owners to express the best of this unique terroir.

Cru La Maqueline

Acquired by Philippe Castel in 2006 , this property in Macau, just to the south of Margaux, is a beacon of originality in the heart of the Médoc, combining production of a lively red wine, a crémant, and a horse ranch. When Cru la Maqueline was added to the Castel Family Estates collection of properties, Philippe Castel brought together two of his passions. Winemaking, thanks to the property’s 36 hectares of vines, and American culture, thanks to stables dedicated to the discipline of “reining”, a western riding competition. A surprising blend of styles, which defines the special atmosphere of the vineyard nestled on the banks of the Garonne, complete with a Western-style acacia ranch, a world away from the surrounding châteaux. This identity is proudly displayed on the labels of the two wines produced at the estate, in the form of a horse’s head and a vine leaf.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is perhaps the most famous wine region in France. It stretches 130 kilometers inland from the Atlantic coast. In 2018, 111,000 hectares of vineyards were registered, a figure that remains largely constant over the previous decade. The main varieties grown here are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc and they are used to make different wines, each producer having its own blend and proportions of mixing the varieties. Here are produced some of the most famous, most expensive and long-lasting wines in the world - the well-known subregions Medoc, Graves, St. Emilion, Pomerol and many others. Bordeaux is divided by the Gironde River on the left and right banks. Characteristic of the left bank (Medoc, Haut Medoc, Graves) is the more serious presence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend of wine, while on the right bank (St. Emillion, Pomerol) merlot predominates. In addition to red wines, Bordeaux is famous for the production of white, mainly a blend between Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, with the Sauternes subregion and the leading Chateau d’Yquem, famous for its complex and multi-layered, aromatic and sweet botrytized dessert wine.
