Bodegas Merayo
In 2010, Pedro established ‘Merayo Bodegas y Viñedos Merayo’. After a life in the wine world, he has devoted the last 20 years to restoring and maintaining the family vineyards. The majority of the vines are more than 80 years old. For decades the Merayo family was one of the most important names in the Bierzo region (with bodega Merayo which closed its doors in 1989). Pedro then invested time in completely renovating the vineyards with a view to making good wines from the local grape varieties, which in Bierzo's case means mostly Mencia and Godello. He built the new bodega on the family estate and began to make wine there in 2010. The results were not long in coming.

Alicante Bouschet
Alicante Bouschet is a black grape variety of French origin, created in the 19th century by crossing the Petit Bouschet and Grenache (formerly known as Alicante) varieties. It is distinguished by the rare characteristic of having not only a dark skin but also a colored pulp, which gives the wines an exceptionally rich, deep ruby color. Wines made from this variety are characterized by a rich aromatic profile of ripe black fruits, blackberries, plums, and spices, combined with good structure and pronounced tannins. The variety is particularly popular in Portugal and Spain (local name is Garnacha Tintorera), where it is used both to produce powerful and concentrated varietal wines and to impart color, body, and character to blends.
