Domaine Roland Schmitt

The success of Alsace’s wines did not come about through a steady, uninterrupted progression. The wine-growing industry has experienced numerous crises and periods of decline. The post-war period was one such difficult time. It took two decades before a new generation rediscovered the quality and originality of its terroir. Roland Schmitt was part of that generation. With the help of a few determined and confident colleagues and friends, he secured a place for Altenberg de Bergbieten amongst the top 25 grands crus of Alsace in 1983. His wines were immediately recognized by the press and the gastronomic community. He emphasized the positive influence of the terroir on these wines, particularly the Glintzberg during those same years. He died in an accident in 1993, just as his efforts were beginning to bear significant fruit.
