Château Margaux is a Premiere Cru Classé mansion that has been producing wine for several hundred years. In its current form, it was built in the early 19th century. In 1977 it was bought by André Mentzenopoulos, who immediately began a renovation program and invested heavily in the vineyards and winery. Only three years later he died and his daughter, Corinne, became head of Château Margaux, just 27 years old. She hired Paul Pontallier (also 27) for the position of chief oenologist, which turned out to be an extremely insightful move. Under his leadership, the winery makes several legendary harvests and the quality remains constant over the years. The vineyards of Château Margaux are 82 hectares with a dominant Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Merlot (20%), and the rest is divided between Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Paul Pontallier is convinced that Cabernet Sauvignon is the variety that contributes the most to the class of his wine.
