Tasting: Super Tuscans – underdogs among the stars

The legendary status of many of the Super Tuscans may be universally accepted today but until the mid-20th century the style in which they are made was not only unheard of, it was even apocryphal. In 1940 marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta began experimenting towards Bordeaux blends (mostly cabernet sauvignon and merlot) – a practice which at that time was bordering on the absurd for Tuscany, whose significant contributions towards the global wine map were relying primarily on the local grape sangiovese.
We’ve chosen iconic Super Tuscan wineries for this tasting. A special guest will make an appearance – the ‘gladiator’ of Piero Antinori (himself, a nephew of Mario Incisa della Rocchetta) who broke Italian conservatism’s shackles.
